Travel Destination IndonesiaMalukuThe Wetar & Liran Island Wetar is located just 56 km north of Timor's northeastern coast. The island is 80 km long in east-west direction and 45 km wide in north-south direction, area about 3.600 sq. km. The interior of the island is mountainous and covered by rain forest, highest mountain is 1.412 m. The climate is in the wet season humid with lot of rain, the rest of the year there can be long periods of drought. The island is sparsely populated, most of the inhabitants are occupied with agriculture and fishing, most important product is sago. A majority of the population are Muslim, with a small group of Christians. Ethnically these people are related to Papuans (see Irian Jaya). A few roads on the island connects the largest cities on the north and south coast, the largest are Masapun, Ilwaki, Arwala and Wesiri. Wetar is known to have good conditions for diving and nice beaches. You can also go hiking here through forests and small villages. Pulau Liran is located just outside the south west tip of Wetar. This is a small island with just a few inhabitants. Like Wetar it is surrounded by corral reefs and deep ocean, on the southern tip there is a small village and a lighthouse.
